Job Description

Position Purpose

Know the Bank’s Mission Statement and incorporate it in your approach to meeting your goals and prioritizing your tasks.  It is the responsibility of each bank staff member and of management to adhere to policies and procedures designed to implement compliance with the laws and regulations to which the bank is subject.  Each bank staff and management member shall be accountable for understanding how compliance with laws and regulations affects the performance of their day-to-day duties, for completing compliance training as assigned and for carrying out those duties in a manner to achieve compliance with those laws and regulations.  

Position Responsibilities

  • Underwrite conventional, FHA, VA, and RD loans to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, in addition to underwriting guidelines from FHLMC, FNMA, MI Companies, and other conduits.
  • Review and analyze appraisal, credit, income and purchase contracts  
  • Secure MI when required
  • Issue loan approval, counter offer, or denial
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to processors and originators
  • Keep current with changes in underwriting standards and maintain up to date information

Minimum Education and Experience 

  • 1-2 years’ experience underwriting FHA loans with DE designation, VA LAAP approved, and conventional loans
  • Experience working with DU,  LP, GUS and other applicable automated underwriting engines

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of State and Federal laws pertaining to the mortgage banking industry. (i.e. RESPA, TILA, ECOA, etc.)
  • Strong working experience with FNMA, FHLMC, VA, and FHA underwriting guidelines
  • Working knowledge of the Encompass origination platform is a plus
  • Aptitude to work independently as well as part of a team 
  • Excellent customer service skills with a high attention to detail
